Today,
Abuja the capital of Nigeria plays host to the best of Africa’s football as all
gather at the International Conference Centre to honor the best of African
soccer.
This
is as the GLO- CAF awards holds to recognize the new King of African football this
night in a greatly expected show to be graced not only by footballers, football
administrators, etc but also with music from the best … and wait for it, food
and drinks all from around Africa.
The
Awards ceremony sponsored as usual by Globacom will be carried out under the
watch of the current Acting President of the world football body, FIFI, Issa
Hayatou who is as well the the Confederation of African Football, CAF boss. The
occasion will be used to acknowledge and reward Africa’s footballers and football
administrators who have shone in the last one year. Stock of gains made would
be taken and the way forward drawn out as all stakeholders in the round game
come out to appreciate the facts and figures of last year. CAF yesterday
confirmed that its list was produced by “A vigorous selection process by the
Technical, Football and Media Committees of CAF, taking into account the
performance of the players for their national teams as well as clubs from
January to November of each year."
On
the list of hopefuls for the CAF African Player of the Year finally reduced to
three are; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon and Borrussia Dortmund of
Germany, four-time African Player of the Year, Yaya Toure of Cote d'Ivoire and
Manchester City, and Andrew Ayew of Ghana and Swansea City FC. This award would
be presented to one of these three, while others have the chance to win in
other categories of awards, such as the Africa based Player of the Year, this would
be done before a beefy of invited guests and over 100 pressmen from across the
world which would allow for the event to be viewed and read about in the nooks
and crannies of the world.
The
Awards night also has good music on its menu to keep the guests entertained in
the course of the activities. Artiste such as Salif Keita, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo, Awilo Longomba are billed to perform tonight. There is also a sprinkle
of the exotic as an American musician, Sammie Leigh Bush Jr., performs too.
And
from Nigeria too comes some of the best musicians of the moment, stars such as Dapo
Oyebanji, known as D’Banj, Korede Bello and Hadiza Blell popularly known as
Di'ja of the Mavins, soul singer, Bez Idakula, female super star, Omawumi, Ego
Ogbaro and the legendary King of Juju Music, Sunny Ade.
The
night surely promises to be a great night offering something for everybody.
