FORMER PDP CHAIRMAN, HALIRU BELLO AND SON GRANTED BAIL BY NIGERIAN COURT. BAIL SET AT N300M

DR. HALIRU BELLO IN COURT

The Federal High Court, Abuja Division today granted a N300m bail to the former PDP Chairman, Dr. Haliru Bello and Abba, his son over their ongoing trial of a four count criminal charge related to a N300m fraud brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Ahmed Mohammed reading the conditions of the bail said each of the accused persons must produce 2 sureties in the same sum. The senior Bello was directed to bring a surety in the Directorate level of the Federal Civil Service while his son’s surety was to be someone of at least Grade level 12 also in the employ of the Federal Government.

The court also ordered that the second surety must own a landed property in Abuja and its value must not be below N300m stating that the title deed of such property must be verified and released to the custody of the court registrar throughout the period of the trial. The sureties are also required to swear to an affidavit of means, as well as tender their recent passport photographs to the court.
The accused persons, Dr. Bello and his son were further directed to submit their international passports to the court.

The court then adjourned the matter to February 16 for the commencement of trial proper. It also directed that until the bail conditions were met, the senior Bello would remain in hospital under police watch while his son would be remanded in prison custody.

It would be recalled that the EFCC sued the two on the allegation that they used a private firm, BAM Projects and Properties, which is also charged to commit fraud by withdrawing the sum of N300m from an account which the National Security Adviser operated with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Both accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
