PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON |
The
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom each week day recognizes an outstanding
individual volunteer with the Daily Point of Light award. It is for people who
are making a change in their community, by assisting in various ways, helping
families with dementia sufferers, raising cash for those in desperate need,
problem solving, etc.
Fiona
Burnett, 47, is the latest recipient of a Point of Light award in the Uk and
she is recognized for knitting more than 700 blankets, at a rate of one blanket
each week for the local Shelter Scotland shop over a period of 13 years, which
has assisted the charity to support homeless people across the country.
Fiona’s
blankets go for £4 apiece, however, many have been bought for as much as £40 with
buyers from far flung places like New Zealand and Zimbabwe, helping to raise over
£2800 which has gone to over 200 families and individuals through the Shelter
Scotland’s free national helpline initiative.
For Fiona Burnett it was amazing receiving the award especially for doing what she takes as a hobby. She is also happy their sale has raised money for a good cause and she says she would continue to knit the blankets.

The
UK Points of Light was initiated in conjunction with the US programme and took
off in April 2014 with a launch in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street. The
Prime Minister has since then honored hundreds of persons with the award for
various acts of volunteering across different communities in the UK.
The
daily Points of Light award has also helped thousands to benefit from the acts
and others also start to their own acts of volunteering. The recognition in
itself help to make volunteers more ready to continue with their assistance.
