A Nigerian born, Duro Oluwu, a fashion designer is among those who decorated the white house for the 2015 Christmas celebration. Oluwu’s work is in the Vermeil room which is sometimes used as a sitting room and he decorated it with 2 eight foot Christmas trees draped with vintage fabrics, ribbons and encrusted tinsel. He was commissioned by Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States of America with other fashion designers like Carolina Herrera, Humberto Leon, Carol Lim and Kenzo to decorate the White House’s China Room, Vermeil Room and library for the holiday season.

Oluwu has a Nigerian father and Jamaican mother and he was brought up in Lagos, spending his childhood travelling between Nigeria and Europe. He read law in London and practiced in Nigeria for a while. He is married to Thelma Golden who is the Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. He became interested in fashion, with inspiration coming from the mixture of colors and rich textures of clothing worn by the people he saw day to day and in October 2004, he started his first women’s wear label with a show in 2005.
