The Chief of Administration of the Nigerian Army, Major General Adamu Abubakar has presented a petition to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over a case the army authorities say is an alleged assassination attempt on the life of Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, whose convoy was held up by persons belonging to the Shi’ites sect along Sokoto road in Zaria, Kaduna State on Saturday, December 12, 2015.

The two-page petition to the NHRC which was received by Professor Ben Angwe, the commission’s Executive Secretary states that military personnel in the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff tried their best to get a peaceful resolution of the matter and were left with no option than to respond with fire power when gunshots were fired at General Buratai’s convoy, so they could provide a safe corridor.

Speaking after the receipt of the petition, the Executive Secretary of NHRC assured the Army authorities that the commission would carry out a proper investigation on the alleged attack with a view to preventing a recurrence.

It would be recalled that the army as a follow up to the attack arrested the leader of the Shi’ites sect, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
