THE NIGERIAN SENATE TAKES SECOND READING OF BILL ON COUNTERFEIT DRUGS

... Convention Against Counterfeit Drugs To Enter Into Force In 2016
COUNTERFEIT DRUG SCOURGE

The Senate of Nigeria today, Thursday, took the second reading of the Act to Amend the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and other matters connected therewith sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti South Senatorial District).

Senator Biodun Olujimi led the debate and she spoke about the harmful effect of counterfeit and fake drugs and called on all the Senators to support the passing of the Bill into a law so as to stem the adverse effect on human lives and the economy.

Other Senators also spoke in support of the Bill and this included Senators Barau Jibrin and Shehu Sani, who remembered the work and life of the late Director General of the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Dora Akinluyi.

Also speaking, Senator Stella Oduah said the essence of the Bill could not be over emphasized while Senators Ighoyota and Ben Murray Bruce also made their contributions in favor of the Bill.

No Senator spoke against the Bill and it was then referred to the Senate's committees on Health and Drug & Narcotics for further input with a report to be presented in four weeks.

It would be recalled that the issue of fake drugs has been a serious one in Nigeria with a high rate of drugs available in the market leading to many deaths among those who patronize such drugs knowingly and otherwise.
