The
political landscape in Rivers State is likely to be infused with a national
flavor as its parliament gets set to have its function taken over by the
National Assembly. This follows the rulings of the Court of Appeal in respect
of matters from the Rivers State House of Assembly Election Tribunal. The
Appeal court delivering its judgments in Abuja ordered a rerun in 22 of the 32
state constituencies which are represented by members in the Rivers State House
of Assembly. The result of these judgments means that the Rivers State House of
Assembly is left with only 10 members.
The
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has 9 members left while the All Progressives
Congress (APC) has only one member out of the ten remaining and this number cannot
form a quorum required for the House to function legally. To be legally
constituted for its duties the quorum required is 11 members and the 10 members
for now do not meet the requirement.
This
being the case, the alternative is to have the National Assembly take over the
duties of the Rivers State House of Assembly until the rerun elections are
carried out and the winners representing the remaining 22 constituencies sworn
in.
