Professor
Jonah Onuoha, Head of Department of Political Science of the University of
Nigeria (UNN) has been suspended by the school authorities for sending two postgraduate
students and an unidentified man to beat up a lecturer in the department, Ben
Nwosu. Prof. Onuoha is also to receive half pay of his salary during the period
of the suspension, which would last till the matter is fully investigated and a
decision taken.
Ben
Nwosu in his petition to the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma
Ozumba, the victim alleged that Prof. Onuoha sent three men to beat him up as
he left Mr. Onuoha’s office after discussing his pending promotion. He said on
leaving the HOD’s office to the general office, three men came behind him and
demanded that he should hand over his phone to them alleging that he had made a
recording of his conversation with the Head of Department. He stated that they violently
struggled to take the phone from him, slapping and hitting him until he released
the phone to them which they handed over to Prof. Jonah. He said Prof. Jonah
not only took his phone but also threatened to deal severely with him.
Prof.
Onuoha is also the object of a petition from some students of the Department of
Political Science him and a cabal of his associates in the department of using
two proxies to organize the extortion of students before they can successfully
go through their degree program.
The
authorities at UNN, however, have expressed their determined to weed out bad
eggs that have turned academic pursuits by students into a bazaar of profit ventures.
