BIG HAUL AS MEXICAN AUTHORITIES FINALLY APPREHEND MEXICAN DRUG LORD ‘EL CHAPO’

EL CHAPO REARRESTED

There must have been a big sigh of relief in Mexico as the President of Mexico, Pena Nieto on Friday announced the capture of Mr. Joaquin Guzman Loera six months after his escape from a Mexican prison via a message on twitter. Mr. Guzman also known as ‘El Chapo’ is said to be the most notorious narcotics trafficker in the world and leads the Sinaloa Drug Cartel.

President Nieto’s tweet confirming the completion of the search for Mr. Guzman and his confinement to detention is face saving for the president as he was held responsible for Mr. Guzman’s second escape from one of the most secure prisons in the country by means of an underground tunnel a mile long, which was constructed by members of his cartel from outside the prison to his cell.

For now, the next question is if the Mexican government will again want to keep custody of Mr. Guzman as in the past or with the experience in hindsight accept to extradite him to the United States, where his group sells most of its hard drugs, for trial. It is feared that Mexico may hesitate to release him to the US as this would imply that Mexico is incapable of handling the situation.

It would be recalled that Mr. Guzman and his son at various times taunted the authorities about his escape making it look like the Mexican authorities did not have the means to recapture him. His son once posted a picture online with a taunting message with regards to the location of his father during the period of his escape.

It must have therefore been a joyful President Nieto who tweeted “Mission Completed: We have him. I would like to inform the Mexican people that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained.”

Mr. Guzman was rearrested after a shootout with Mexican marines during a raid in his home state. The marines are said to have seized 2 armored vehicles, 8 rifles, a handgun and a rocket grenade launcher in the raid. The gun battle left 5 dead and one wounded.
