LIBYA |
The
Libyan Islamist group, Ansar al-Sharia which confirmed that it killed the US
Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens and three others on September 11,
2012 in the course of violent protests that greeted a US produced anti Muslim
film is said to be now under fire as at Monday as it was reported to have been
surrounded by the army of the internationally accepted government of Libya.
The rebel group has been held down in the Libyan cities of Benghazi and
Derna,
A
Libyan army colonel, Abdullah al-Shafayee confirmed that the group had been cornered
off and lacked access to a land exit with only access to the coast of Benghazi.
The Daesh militants as they are known earlier on Monday had attacked the Libyan
Es Sider oil port, killing two civilians and guards and putting a storage tank
on fire. It would be recalled that this group had in March 2015 pledged their allegiance
to Daesh (ISIL/ISIS) and has since then been considered by Libyan
officials to be a part of the group.
The
Libyan nation has not known peace for some years now and despite a settlement being
reached between the secular and Islamist faction of the Libyan Civil
War the difference has not been resolved. Libya presently has its capital
Tripoli in the hands of the Islamist faction while Benghazi is controlled by the
secular faction.
