BRIGHT OKONGWU |
With
his eyes set on the future, 2021 does not seem that far, as he bids his time
for that dream date Bright Okongwu continues to play basketball at Calvary Christian
in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA where he is a seventh grader but he is surely a
great basketball player with much of a future.
Okongwu
arrived the US in 2015 at the age of 12 years but he was already big in size at
6-foot-10 and 250 pounds and impossible to miss physically, well he has turned
13 now and though reports show that his middle school stats have not been made
public, and the video of his skills are still rare to see, his coach is very confident
that he would be a leading player for Calvary Christian as soon as he is able
to legally play for his college squad.
The
coach of Calvary Christian boys basketball team, Cilk McSweeney recalled how
Bright came over to the United States in July and how remarkable he looked at 6
foot 10 and weighing 250 pounds at just 12 years old. He draws one’s attention
to “the way he moves and runs the floor, his touch, it’s unteachable.” He says
I’m excited about the next six years.
Coach
Cilk adds “with his size at this young age, you look at Shaq and all these
other guys that were his size. But the way he runs the floor and his hands,
he’s probably going to be one of a kind if he keeps working.”
It’s
interesting to note that the most insightful videos of Okongwu come from his
home country Nigeria such as where Bright filmed a pair of workout videos more
than a year ago. The film highlights Okongwu playing against an overmatched opponent;
he dunks and performs other skillful techniques showing athleticism of a high
level.
Well,
the question is would Okongwu make a mark in the game, especially against top
competition? However, while time ticks away to 2021, Okongwu continues to keep
his sight firmly on his dream to finish as the top player in America by the
time he chooses a college in 2021.
