COSON |
Tuesday, December 15, 2015 was a remarkable day
for members of the Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON as they unanimously approved
the distribution of a record 140 million Naira in copyright royalties. This
would be paid to members and affiliates on a proposal made by the Board of the
society which collects royalties for the use of musical works and sound
recordings in Nigeria.
The society’s Extra-Ordinary General Meeting
(EGM) which held at the Oranmiyan Hall, Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja was the occasion
for the approval and true to their words a number of members of COSON who were at
the venue confirmed that they received alerts from their banks confirming the
payment of their royalties not long after the approval was given.
The musicians came in their numbers, both new and
old from all over Nigeria to attend the Extra Ordinary General Meeting, which
took place at the Lagos Airport Hotel’s Oramiyan Hall and all were in a jolly
good mood as they celebrated the music industry. The chairman of COSON, Chief
Tony Okoroji in his address at the event spoke of the need for COSON to maintain
full and continued transparency and accountability at all times, he said “It is
my belief that the policies of putting our distribution proposals before our
members and seeking your mandate before distributions are undertaken have
helped to bring about confidence within the membership and have ensured the
stability that COSON has enjoyed.”
Chief Okoroji stated that he believed that all members
had an obligation to spread the message by telling everyone that a Nigerian
organization known as COSON was working and that COSON was 100% transparent and
professional. He added that the
initiative was utilized to ensure that the society would continue to enjoy the
proper kind of confidence that gives it the momentum to continue to serve the
members and their children now and in the future.
He informed the members that COSON had started to
digitally monitor the music played by over 90 broadcast stations across the
country so as to realize revenue through royalty charged for their benefit.
