Nigeria’s U-23 national team (Dream Team VI) coached by Samson Siasia, on Saturday won the finals of the U-23 African Cup of Nations by defeating Algeria’s Les Fennecs 2-1 at the Leopold Stade Senghor Stadium in Dakar, capital of Senegal to become the African champions.

Man of the match, Etebo Peter Oghenekaro, the Warri Wolves player scored two goals to win the match for Nigeria. However, an own goal by Nigerian player, Oduduwa Segun gave the Algerians some hope of making the game theirs but this never materialized. The Algerians also had the misfortune of missing a penalty in the second half when keeper, Emmanuel Daniel stopped a shot from Zinedine Ferhat.

Nigeria’s first goal came when its FIFA U-17 World Cup star, Victor Osimhen who started the match earned his team a penalty when 13 minutes into the match, the Algeria captain Ryad Keniche fouled him in the box and Oghenekaro scored to give Nigeria an early lead. The Algerian’s equalizer came by when Oduduwa headed home a cross into his own net.

However, shortly the break, Oghenekaro scored again to restore Nigeria’s lead, bring his tally in the competition to five and put him as the highest scorer.

Nigeria missed a number of chances of further increasing the score line but it is enough that the trophy is in its kitty and it has qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
