It
has been reported that Senator Hadi Sirika, Nigeria’s Minister of State for
Aviation, has directed that the use of a ladder instead of the proper staircase
by passengers to disembark from an Aero Contractors aircraft after its Abuja to
Bauchi flight on Saturday should be investigated.
In
making the order, the Minister stated that the act of the airline contravenes
the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, NCARs, and International Civil Aviation
Organization, ICAO, Standards and Recommended Practices, SARPS., which provide
for safety of flight operations.
Mr.
James Odaudu, Deputy Director of Press and Public Affairs in the Ministry of
Aviation releasing the Minister’s statement on Sunday in Abuja, stated that reports
had been received showing that the airline did not use the plane’s stairs but
rather used a conventional ladder for the evacuation of passengers from the
Boeing 737 aircraft at the Bauchi airport after the flight. The flight is said
to have been a chartered flight.
The
investigation is aimed at determining the immediate and remote causes of the
incident with a view to developing and implementing measures that will prevent
a reoccurrence of such unsafe and unacceptable procedure in the future that
would expose passengers to high risk of serious injury.
Nigeria really needs things to work right, only when things are done properly can we make enduring progress in all aspects of our national life. Why should a plane fly without its stairs or why should the Bauchi airport not have a mobile stair for use by such planes which come without? So many questions again in need of an answer.
