Today, December 24th
would remain a day of pain and sorrow for the people of Anambra State, Nigeria
as over 100 people are reported to have been killed in an explosion which occurred
at a gas plant in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The incident occurred at
about 11am this Christmas and resulted from a fire started while a commercial gas
truck was discharging its contents at the Chikason Group gas plant.
Information has it that
the explosion affected not only the customers at the gas plant premises but
also some passersby who were in the area at the time leading to the death of
over 100 and injuring quite a number.
The explosion caused a
great commotion around the area as people took to their heels, many not knowing
what was going on and those who knew to save their life.
Medical services eventually conveyed the
survivors of the explosion to the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital
(NAUTH) in Nnewi while the town continued to mourn the loss of such a great
number of persons.
This incident brings to light the lack of safety
measures in many of such facilities across the nation. However, it may not be
possible to say with certainty for now what may have been the cause of today’s
explosion but the provision of the necessary safety measures should have helped
to keep those affected by the explosion to a minimum, especially without
affecting the passersby
There is yet no release from the authorities on
the incident. See pictures below:
