NEW PRESIDENT OF BURKINA FASO SWORN IN TODAY, SAYS DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM ARE SACROSANT (PHOTOS)

Roch Marc Christian Kabore who was sworn in today, December 29th as the president of Burkina Faso in the nation’s capital, Quagadougou with a number of presidents from West Africa present. Nigeria’s president was represented by a delegation led by the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. President Kabore in the course of his inauguration assured his countrymen that his administration viewed the inauguration as a victory for for “democracy and freedom” which it would uphold.

The former presidents of Nigeria and Ghana, Olusegun Obasanjo and Jerry Rawlings were also at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Ouaga 2000 Stadium venue of the ceremony which marked a victory for the regional body, ECOWAS which on its own ensured that civil rule was restored to Burkina Faso after the coup led by General Gilbert Diendere that truncated the regime of President Blaise Compaore who attempted to rewrite the country’s constitution to enable him have another term beyond that provided for.

The new president, Roch Marc Christian Kabore aged 58 years won the elections which held on November 29, 2015 by more than 53 % of the votes cast. He was a former prime minister and the speaker of the country’s parliament before the coup incident.

This is the second time Burkina Faso is electing a president since its independence in 1960 as for most part it had been ruled by the military and then Compaore.

The United States of America was represented at the event by a delegation led by Honorable Linda Thomas - Greenfield, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.
