THE D'APPOLLONIOS AND DeSANTIS, 2ND RIGHT |
A
Phoenix family birthday celebration dinner at a Scottsdale restaurant last
Saturday, December 5, nearly ended up as
the opposite, a mourning party, if not for the presence of a complete stranger
who turned out to be a nurse and like the good Samaritan, helped to save the day.
Speaking,
Al D’Appollonio said the family was at the Sumo Maya restaurant Saturday
evening, just about finishing the dinner in celebration of his wife’s birthday
when he noticed that his mother-in-law, Irene DeSantis was looking vacantly
into the air and he called the attention of his wife who was sitting beside
her.
He
said he thereafter went round to where she sat and when she remained
unresponsive, he laid her on the floor so that family members could help render
first aid. Al D’Appollonio says it was in the process of doing this that a
woman walked over to them and introduced herself as a nurse asking if she could
assist them.
D'Appollonio
then started chest compressions on DeSantis while the nurse performed mouth to
mouth resuscitation until paramedics called by someone from the restaurant arrived
and took DeSantis away on a stretcher. She had, however, before that started
breathing again on her own. D'Appollonio and the rest of the family accompanied
the ambulance workers outside and, in the commotion, never got the identity of
the strange nurse.
DeSantis
was discharged from the hospital some three hours later with no apparent
condition and in good health and now the family wants to meet the mysterious Good
Samaritan who helped save their mother’s life and disappeared without a trace.
The
family has tried to trace the mystery lady who they feel they owe gratitude but
unfortunately no success has been made as even the restaurant general manager cannot
locate the woman.
D'Appollonio's
wife has written an open letter to the "Angel Nurse," in The
Arizona Republic newspaper which ran on Wednesday expressing regret for not
thanking her and appreciation for her life saving assistance. They hope a
reader may know the mystery nurse and pass their gratitude to her.
