Reuters reports that a Catholic priest in France is
to appear in court on January 16, 2016 after accepting that he stole over 700,000
euros ($741,000) collected from parishioners who attended his church and buyers
of holy candles for over his 25 years of his service as a priest. The French
public prosecutor's office made this known in a statement released today, Tuesday
in his office in Foix, southwestern France.
The priest, René
Heuillet, 80, admitted that he had converted the proceeds of regular church
collections between 1987 and his retirement in early 2013. He also accepted
that he collected over 100,000 euros from the sale of votive candles.
The matter was brought to public view by the priest
who took over from Heuillet in the Pyrenean mountain village of Saint-Lizier,
however, investigations show that he did not spend most of the money as the public
prosecutor, Karline Bouisset said the frozen bank account of Heuillet had 656,000
euros in it.
