The
President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena is annoyed with the promoters of
the Enrique Iglesias show in Colombo on December 20th where at the
height of the excitement, female spectators removed their brassieres and flung
at Iglesias and has advocated that the promoters be publicly flogged with stingray
tail whips as obtained in ancient Sri Lanka.
Mr.
Sirisena is upset because it goes against the morals of the country which is predominantly
Buddhist. However, not a whole lot of Sri Lankans are in support of the
president as seen in online reaction to his comments. Many drew attention to
the fact that Sri Lanka is a foremost exporter of lingerie for international
brands, others drew his attention to the fact that his son-in-law was present
at the show which was fully packed. Some even promoted a hashtag #BrasForSl
certainly not to express any favor for the president’s opinion.
The
president, however, did not call for the flogging the women involved but put
the blame squarely on the promoters, which has as main shareholders, Sri Lankan
cricket stars Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara who have offered an
apology for the incident which they termed “negative experience”. They also
offered to do a partial refund of the show’s tickets which were from $34 - $340
each as this was also queried by the president.
The
Colombo show was the only Asian stop for the Spaniard’s “Love and Sex” world
tour.
What
do you think? Flogging?
