SHAKER AAMER |
Britain’s
last resident at the United States Guantanamo Bay military facility, Shaker
Aamer, 48, has expressed his advice to Islamic extremists living in the UK and
that is to "get the hell out".
In
the course of his 13 years captivity, Mr. Aamer was reportedly tortured and
held in solitary confinement for 360 days. He was eventually released and
returned to the UK in October.
Mr.
Aamer who says Islam does not allow the murder of civilians said in an interview
with The Mail on Sunday: "How can you give yourself the right to be living
here in this country, and living with the people and acting like you are a
normal person, and then you just walk in the street and try to kill
people?"
He
said further: "Even if there is a war you cannot kill just anybody, you
cannot kill kids, you cannot kill chaplains, you cannot just go in the street
and get a knife and start stabbing people.
The
father of four speaking out against extremists said: "It helps their
(extremists) cause... if you keep looking at people like they are terrorists
before they do anything, then you will push them towards violence."
He also
talked about the pain of his detention staying with him forever; however, he said
his reunion with his family "washed away the pain of 14 years".
Mr
Aamer, accused of having links to al Qaeda was first detained in Afghanistan in
2001before being moved to Guantanamo Bay. The US military information on him
lists him as a "close associate of Osama bin Laden" who fought in the
battle of Tora Bora. He, however, denied the allegation, stating that he was
doing charity work and in 2007 the charges against him were dropped. He is
reportedly planning to seek legal redress against the UK government for the
part it played in his mistreatment.
